FORMAT OVERVIEW

What Is Master Trainer?

Master Trainer is a community-built multiplayer singleton format designed for 2-4 players. It brings the identity and evolution fantasy of creature-based battling into a longer, more political tabletop card game experience inspired by the multiplayer strategy that Magic players know well.

Where the Idea Came From

Master Trainer started with a small pod of friends who loved playing Magic together, but also loved the Pokémon world. The goal was to capture the table politics, singleton deckbuilding, threat assessment, and long-form strategy of multiplayer Magic while keeping the creature identity, evolution, and battle fantasy that makes Pokémon cards exciting.

Instead of replacing either game, Master Trainer became its own fan-made format: a way to use existing cards inside a custom multiplayer rules system built around Masters, Apex threats, Paragon finishers, Player Life, battlefield positioning, and Energy Pools.

Design Goals

Master

Your persistent signature creature. The Master is the identity anchor of the deck and can return throughout the game.

Apex

The deck's single designated high-tier centerpiece. Apex cards include V, GX, ex, and EX style cards under the format rules.

Paragon

A once-per-game external finisher. Paragons are outside the deck and represent the deck's endgame escalation.

Energy Pool

Energy cards become permanent Sources that generate temporary Energy each turn, creating a slower strategic resource system.

What Makes It Different?

Master Trainer is not standard Pokémon TCG and it is not Commander. It is a custom fan-created format that borrows the best inspirations from both worlds: expressive deck identity, multiplayer politics, iconic creature progression, and evolving battlefield states.
